Bodyweight, weightlifting, and cardio: The miserable trinity of exercise drills.

The beginning:

I have always had a strong fascination with getting ripped and into shape. However, even at a young age, I became highly concerned with hoping these exercises were effective to begin with. Granted a good diet alongside a reasonable exercise plan is well-needed, but does it work? Or am I simply burning myself out?

Bodyweight exercise (the basics)

Ever since my adolescent years, I have become very accumulated to calisthenics or as I call it bodyweight exercises. From my P.E. courses in high school to my military career, I had a pretty clear idea of what bodyweight exercises are. These range from push-ups, sit-ups, and squats, in other words, if it hurts your body I’ve done it. These exercises helped me lose weight and get into shape fast. It also helped me get and retain a level of mental focus I couldn't get anywhere else.

The main gripe I normally have towards these kinds of exercises is that yes, I may get into shape with these exercises, but I rarely get into bodybuilder shape. I may end up skinnier with a flat stomach yet, I always long to have a Ronnie Coleman-type physique.

The fun yet dangerous world of weightlifting

I can’t think of too many young men including myself who wouldn’t want to possess a chiseled physique similar to Jay Cutler, Rich Piana, or the icon himself Arnold Schwarzenegger. It may not be the exercise itself I am drawn to. Maybe it’s the small level of aggression itself. The feeling of pushing through a series of bench presses feels as though you could lift a whole house if you wanted to.

However, the real dangers of these exercises can slowly settle in if they are done in an unsafe manner. I as a young adult still get premonitions of a 300-pound barbell crushing my chest after a bench press session gone completely wrong. The fear of not paying enough attention to my cardio needs often catches up with me too in the pursuit of bulking up.

 Cardio drills (leg killers)

I can’t help but think to myself there is nothing better than the breeze blowing in my face while going on a light brisk jog. For most people who want to burn off weight and calories, this is the go-to exercise. Running itself can be a discipline as much as it is an art form. Books, movies even numerous websites are made on this topic. I can specifically remember my Fort Gregg-Adams days when they made us run EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.

Those days at times could generate great anguish on my legs. My thighs would burn for weeks, my ankles were shot, and I would feel severe sessions of shin splits. I get that most people would respond with sayings such as “no pain, no gain”. So what happens when there is great pain you may never fully recover from?

In the end

Hear me out if you would. I am not telling you to no longer do these exercises. All three forms of these exercises can and will benefit you greatly if they are done correctly safely and responsibly. The one thing I would hope one would take from this blog is don’t burn yourself out for the sake of doing so. Always have a well-put-together plan first then go after that goal so you can enjoy the waves of your blue ocean.
